Back in the day, when I was a college student--wind in my sails, a skip in my step, a sparkle in my eye (and all that jazz)--I took a "service-learning" course that involved conducting writing workshops in schools, homeless shelters, jails, etc. I later interned with the school literary journal edited by the same teacher. Long story short, she got me to compile work from an assortment of those classes and to create a "service learning binder" that she could present to advocate for the benefit of these classes (the long story is still not short!). All that said, I had the privilege of reading the poems and responsive-writing of the participants. One from a jail was my favorite and I've never forgotten it. The writing prompt was simple, finish the following sentence, "In the end..."

One man wrote, "In the end I will endure."
